Gearing Up To Your First Stroller Run

I am pretty sure that we are all excited to which ever upcoming events, what more those who will run their maiden stroller run.

Besides the spirit, hype and also enthusiasm, preparation is essential. Here are some that you should look out within this few months (assuming that we are looking forward to the inagural Putrajaya Night Marathon or #PNM2018)

1 - Physical strength
As we will be pushing an additional 10, 15 or in certain cases 40kg, do so weight training. Some pumping, weight lifting, and sit up helps a lot.

2 - The target is to complete within COT
Whats your average timing so far? If this is your 1st stroller run, expect an additional of 30 to 45 mins from your average timing.
Targeting a PB compared to your solo run is doable, but close to impossible on the 1st attempt 😅

3 - Train with your kids
Unlike a solo HM, we hit the wall as we reach the 15th or 17th KM marker, the challenge when running with a kid is even before the flag off.
Train your kid to sit in the stroller, run with you as you go uphill, pose at the photographers when you see one, stop for drinks at the water stations and even plan for toilet breaks.
Remember this, the kid is the limelight, screw this one, and there goes your run.

4 -Simulate Race Day
Training's like the solo one, should follow the race day. If its a night run, then train at night.
Try to replace weights when your kid can't accompany you. At the same time, bring them along and tell them whats their role on the race day.

5 -Increase the mileage accordingly
If you will be running a 10k, its best that you do atleast 7 to 8k with stroller during trainings.
If its your maiden stroller HM, best to complete few solo HM and also do some 10 to 15k stroller running.

6 - Set the mind right

Whats your reason for running with a stroller?
If it is fame, then you should then push a stroller with weights and not your kid.
The purpose or perhaps should be the main reason we run with a stroller is to include our kid as we enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Have fun, stick to what drives and motivates you, instead of whats challenging and the fame over it.

7 - Backed up when need be
Maybe kinda early to state this, but I think its vital. On the event day, if you are feeling unwell, or your kid is not at their best health condition, DO NOT proceed with the race.
Yes, if either one is not feeling well, back off!
Why? Stroller running requires you to be extra fit, fitter than you usually are. There will always be another race.

The above are only few areas where I think is essential at the moment. Shall share more towards the race day or if there is any request for it.

Please also note that these are only guiding principles and may be best to do, but may not be trully accurate nor it can fit for all.
